Club updates September 7th

The past week has been an excellent week for the club. At the beginning of the week we had the under 14 team giving a great performance in winning the County A Semi-final against all the odds.

Saturday was D Day for our seniors. Only a victory over St Breckans would get us through to the knock-out stages. Playing against the wind in the first half our boys carried the game to St Breckans and played excellent footbal. The opening two scores were points but they could just as easily been goals. At half time we led by 0-7 to 0-4.With the aid of the wind in the second half we expected to run out easy winners but St Breckan had different ideas. They attacked almost continuosly for the first fifteen minutes and a combination of a stout defence and poor shooting by St Breckans left Breckans with just a point to show for their efforts.A goal by Gearoid Looney, one of our key men on the day, broke the deadlock and Cooraclare took control again for the rest of the game. A second goal by Sean McGuire sealed the victory and we eventually won by 2-12 to 0-7.We now meet Kilmurry Ibrickane in the quarter final – a tall order – but if we have hopes of victory in the championship we must defeat them along the way. That game takes place on September 17th.

Our Junior team played Miltown Malbay for a place in the quarter final. Fieding a strong team we took charge from the start. Playing with the wind in the first half we scored some great points from all angles against what proved to be a weak Miltown Malbay team.At half time the score was 1-12 to 0-0.Miltown rallied a little in the second half playing with the aid of the wind but we ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-4.

Under 14s win the Cotter cup

Cooraclare 7-09 Clondegad 2-02

Cooraclare under 14’s recently took part in the Mickey Cotter Cup competition. This is an annual pre under 14-championship competition organised by Kilmihil Gaa Club in memory of the late Mickey Cotter to promote under age football.

Eight teams were invited and Cooraclare had a comfortable win over Kilrush in round one. We then met the host side Kilmihil and under windy conditions, which made it a game of two halves, we again were victorious. In the final we met Clondegad, which were last years winners.

In a very entertaining game Cooraclare’s forwards took the game to Clondegad with Shane O Donoghue, Pearse Lillis, Jack Morrissey, Patrick Meaney, Donal O Grady Colin Mac Namara & Rory Mc Loone all getting on the score sheet to give Cooraclare a comfortable win. Stern defensive work by Sean Mac Namara, Sean O Neill, Cillian Burke, Niall Kelly, Keith Marrinan, Fergal Donnellan, Ciaran O Donoghue and Cillian Roche in goals kept Clondegad at bay.

Frank Roche, Seamie Donnellan, George Lillis, Christy O Donoghue and Connor Marrinan manage the Cooraclare team.

Cooraclare beat Kildysart in Garry Cup

Cooraclare beat Kildysart in Garry Cup

Cooraclare Scored their third victory out of four in the Garry Cup when they defeated Kildysart by a score of 2-12 to 1-10. Fielding an understrength team, they were always on top after a classic Andrew O Neill goal early in the game. Thomas Donnellan added a second in the second half. Kildysart rallied a little in the 2nd half scoring a goal and a few points. Our lads finished stronger  running out comfortable winners.  It was good to see Joe Considine being introduced in the second half. Rory Donnelly was also available for selection if required.

Junior As have a comfortable win over Meelick

Our Junior A team had a resounding victory over Meelick on Saturday. Their cause was helped by the fact that Two members of the Meelick team received red cards during the course of the game. From our point of view Darragh O Dea (Son of Pat, Tullabrack) scored a total of 3-8.

Junior A No 2 Team narrowly defeated by Clarecastle

A gallant effort by our Junior B team just came up short as Clarecastle proved too strong in the end defeating our lads by 3 points in the end. It was a good result  considering this was Clarecastle’s first team and we were fielding our 3rd team
